Top 10 Reasons to Fear Google

There are naysayers in every crowd. They are the people who hate Microsoft because it’s so ubiquitous. On the same page, there are people who loath Wal-Mart because it is a global company that is supposedly wrecking local retailers everywhere. But when most people think of operating systems or cheap shopping, they think Wal-Mart and Microsoft.

Enter Google. Once just a search engine, it is now sprouting up extensions like Jack’s bean stalk on steroids. These extensions are what’s making Google so irreplaceable for many people who want the one stop shop. Google is fast becoming the Wal-Mart of the Internet. And it’s for that reason that some people are starting to fear the company.

10. Google Video

When most people think of looking for videos, YouTube is the automatic choice. However, Google has gone a step beyond YouTube. Not only does a Video search yield all of the YouTube results and play them in the Google window, but the search engine also searches the entire web for your content. While Google Video may not feature categories like YouTube, when you can search the entire web, who cares?

9. Google Maps & Google Earth

A few years ago, Google created an application called Google Earth that would let a person input an address and the application would give them the most recent satellite images of that area. Another nifty feature was the ability to plot a course between multiple locations similar to Mapquest.com. Now Google Maps has taken on Mapquest and many other map making companies. However, Google Maps has gone beyond the simple map adding in the flexibility of a Yellow Pages with displayed directions to the pizza parlor or local electronics store.

8. Google Books & Google Scholar

Libraries across the world are wondering what they will do with all the books they house once Google is done. Years ago, Google Books announced that it would try to make every page of every book available and searchable online. They are still working on that one due to copyright laws; however, they have now made searchable many scholarly articles. The library may still be the place to complete most of your research, but maybe not for long.

7. Google News

Who wouldn’t like a searchable database of recent articles on any topic imaginable? Perhaps the media companies who want to be the sole source for your news gathering. Though having that searchable source of news might mean a more balanced view of the news, when someone gets thousands or millions of hits, how do they choose what is the best news source for them?

6. Google Shopping

Retailers everywhere are cringing over the fact that their prices are being compared to other retailers with one simple click. The Google Shopping feature searches Web sites for whatever you want and gives you only what you want or more than you can handle when you are not specific. eBay and Paypal beware – Google Checkout is coming. You will soon be able to do all of your shopping through Google as well.

5. iGoogle

Similar to Yahoo, Google has branched out by giving the search engine a customizable homepage with multiple features such as news feeds, weather, horoscopes and others. A one-stop shop has a tendency to leave out all the small details that some people crave; and it seems like iGoogle could be just the icing rather than the whole cake when it comes to the details.

4. G-mail

Again like Yahoo and even Microsoft, Google has created an online e-mail system. While millions of people have been using online e-mail for the last decade, this is just one more step for the Big G in making it the first and only destination on the Web.

3. Google Docs

Google is not satisfied just going after Yahoo, Mapquest, libraries and retailers. Microsoft and all the other word processing software companies beware. Now with a G-mail account, you can create documents such as invoices, letters, calendars and many more. Or how about a PowerPoint like presentation? The possibilities seem endless and your documents can be accessed by yourself and anyone else you allow online. Who needs Word anyways?

2. Frankenstein Internet

What Google has not created itself, it has started to wrap under its envelope. YouTube and Blogger are just two examples of other sites that have joined forces with the G Empire to create a monster. And if Google can’t find a suitable partner, then it has started to build its own version of popular sites such as an IM system (Google Talk), a social networking site like Facebook (Orkut) and other features. With pieces and parts from here, there and everywhere, one has to wonder if Google isn’t going to fall in the same trap as Microsoft – being too large and diverse to get one thing right.

1. Google

The main thing that Google is known as is, of course, a search engine. And that is one thing they have done correctly though many people question the validity of the search optimization methods used by the company. That said when most people want information where do they go? Google, of course. The name is so synonymous with search engines that is has been added to the dictionary as a known for searching on the Internet. If that’s not scary enough for you, perhaps you should Google scary see what you think is scarier.

Top Ten Stumblers with calculated adjustments.

Coming up with the Top Ten Stumblers seems like an easy task; just visit the top stumbler page on StumbleUpon and then use the top two rows to get 10 and you’re done. But then I started looking at the number of “Likes” for each stumbler and saw large discrepancies in the the total count of liked pages, videos and photos. Higher numbers didn’t mean higher rankings? So how are the top stumblers decides? Well, StumbleUpon isn’t sharing so I devised my own calculation based on my ideas of how it should be.

Rather than just add all the liked pages, videos and photos I decided that including the number of Fans and Reviews should be part of the equation. I also thought those two things should be given more weight. So I set up the following ratios to help distribute importance better.

Pages – Ratio 1:1 – Since pages are most “liked” I decided this would be the baseline. Everything else either goes up or down in importance when compared with pages.

Videos – Ratio 1:1.25 – Watching a video takes a slightly higher level of commitment and so gets a +.25 additional points because of this.

Photos – Ratio 1:.75 – Looking at a photo is done very quickly and judged just as fast. Less effort is needed and so less importance is given to higher number of photos. A -.25 is the ratio adjustment.

Fans – Ratio 1:5 – Since fans are supposed to dictate popularity they are weighted much higher. If you have done enough to convince someone to be your fan then job well done and +4 points.

Reviews – Ratio 1:10 – Consider this. You have influenced someone so much that they have stopped their frantic web browsing (stumbling) and clicked a button and then wrote a review of your stumble site. That is incredible with our 2 second attention spans. I bet no one even reads this sentence because attention spans are so short, especially on the Internet. If you get a review you are doing something very right and get +9 points for each review received.

So there you have it. Each “like” number for all your stats is multiplied by the ratio adjustment and then all those calculations are added together to come up with the true Top Ten Stumblers. Thanks for stumbling and keep stumbling for the stars!

Top 10 Internet Illnesses

FACT: You use most of your body when you are sitting at a computer typing on a keyboard – not just your eyes and fingers. Your muscles allow you to sit in an upright position and all of your organs are working (sometimes, even your brain).

Sadly, despite this amazing fact, surfing the Internet does not qualify as a workout.

Is your surfing position an Igor-style hunch rather than a hang ten? Do you have the wild, crazy Igor eyes to match? Then you need to read this list!

Eligibility: To get on the list, the condition must be directly related to Internet use (I’m defining condition as an illness, disorder, or injury).
Rank: Ranked by the seriousness of the condition and number of people affected, as interpreted by me (it’s my list).

As always I will personally reply to any recommendations or complaints in the comments below, so go nuts (but not nuts like #3 below, please…)

10. Eyestrain

eye-strain

When you use your eyes a lot, they get strained- so when you stare at a computer screen intensely for hours it isn’t a surprise when your eyes get sore. According to mayoclinic.com: “Although eyestrain can be annoying, it usually isn’t serious and goes away once you rest your eyes”, placing it firmly in tenth place on this list.

9.  Health Anxiety/Pain Catastrophization

see-no-evil

Some people have a tendency to misinterpret or over-interpret pain signals.  According to Wikipedia, “psychologists refer to this as pain catastrophizing (the tendency to think the worst when one feels pain).” According to the same source, health anxiety is a “sense that something is seriously wrong that does not lessen with normal test results and reassurance from health professionals.”

Thanks to all of the scary medical information available on the Internet (some of it’s even true), people who never experienced health anxiety or pain catastrophization before are now freaking out. Speaking from experience, the Internet can make a borderline hypochondriac cross over into crazy town. Thanks a search on the Internet, a sudden case of the late-night sniffles could be nasal polyps or even diphtheria. We’re not saying it is for sure, but there’s a chance… pleasant dreams!

8. Headaches

headache

There are three different types of headaches associated with Internet use:

Tension Headaches – The term ‘tension headache’ is misleading. These headaches are not caused by stress but often due to strain to your neck or eyes. According to mayoclinic.com, they “can last from 30 minutes to an entire week”.

Chronic Daily Headaches – You suffer from these if you have a headache for more than half of the days in a month.

Stress Headaches – Apparently it’s not the big stress that causes your head to hurt. It’s the small annoyances all day long. So, if you spend a lot of time on the Internet it may be time to switch to a faster connection or upgrade to a new computer if you spend a lot of time staring hopelessly at your computer screen while it downloads information or crashes on you.

7. Back Pain

proper-chair-posture

Poor posture results in back pain, particularly when it is accompanied by obesity, smoking, or lack of exercise. Now I’m sure there are many people out there who sit on a Pilates ball and crunch carrot sticks while they spend hours each day Digging, Stumbling, or Tweeting – but, if you’re the Internet equivalent of a couch potato you might want to cut back on the corn chips and do some sit ups or something…

We interrupt this list while the writer goes to take a Tylenol or two – her back is killing her!

6. Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

dvt

If you’ve been on an airplane in the last few years you’ve probably seen the warning information about Deep Vein Thrombosis: it’s “the formation of a blood clot in a deep vein” (Wikipedia). Also known as “economy class syndrome”, air travelers who don’t move around and are dehydrated are particularly vulnerable to this kind of blood clot.

The key points here are immobility and dehydration: If you are so immersed in your “Second Life” that you don’t remember the last time you went outside or drank a glass of water in this life, you are at risk. I couldn’t find any Internet related DVT cases documented, but I still think it deserves 6th place because a DVT blood clot can dislodge itself, travel to your lungs, and kill you. Zoiks!

So, move those legs around or try to type standing up for a change… oh no wait, that would be bad for your back…

5. Munchausen Syndrome

munch

The Internet provides endless chatrooms, online support groups, and social networking sites where people can share their problems, seek advice, and get sympathy.

I was shocked to learn that some people actually fake illnesses or tragedies just to get attention. They pretend to be victims of rape, assault, abuse, and serious illness in order to get attention: a symptom of Munchhausen Syndrome. And, according to an article at the BBC News website, the “internet may be encouraging people to pretend they are ill in order to get attention, according to US research.”

In the same news article quoted above, a Dr. Feldman from Alabama explains that persons with this syndrome can be treated with “a chance to get… attention from medical professionals in a psychiatric setting. However, most patients do not want this. They want to have a serious medical ailment and not a psychiatric illness” (news.bbc.co.uk).

4. Facebook Depression

facebook-logo

According to the Daily Mail, Facebook and other social networking sites make teenage girls “prone to anxiety and depression”. Along with texting and emailing, these sites allow teens to coruminate (a fancy word for talking about things over and over and over again). According to the same article, “repeated conversations among adolescent girls, particularly about romantic disappointments, worsen their mood and create negative emotions” (www.dailymail.co.uk). Prior to this teenage girls apparently did not dwell on topics such as ‘do my bangs look funny’ or ‘why didn’t he call?’ for hours and hours and then sulk in their rooms.

These are the results of a study conducted on 83 teenage girls at Stony Brook University (NY). One of the doctors, Dr. Davila, offers this antidote for teenagers who continuously talk about the same problem: “They could change the subject”.

Parents of teenage girls everywhere now plan to send their daughters to Stony Brook University so that they too can learn to deduce blatantly obvious solutions to things that everyone already knows.

3. Internet Rage

internet-rage

While it might be argued that Internet Rage itself is not really harmful to your health, it can lead to Internet stalking and perhaps even violence – so if you are the one inciting the rage then you should beware.

According to Tim McDonald of http://www.newsfactor.com, one of the sources of Internet rage is “information overload”. He explains, “the sheer volume of information available on the Web — and the slowness in accessing it — causes a great deal of stress, according to the independent survey commissioned by WebTop, a British Web indexing company.” He also reports that a study “found that 68 percent of the 200 people surveyed found computer glitches more stressful than spending a weekend with a partner’s parents, and 38 percent found them more stressful than being stuck on public transportation.”

Internet Rage manifests itself all over the place, from the comment section of a blog post to the headlines on your local news station.

Browse the comments under a Youtube video, a website’s forum, or on someone’s blog and it doesn’t take long to find some very nasty words. Perhaps the anonymous nature of the Internet encourages people to say what they really think. The worst part of this is that it’s contagious- your angry comment angers others, and the downward spiral continues.

Please let me point out that when your therapist suggested that you ‘write your feelings down’, she didn’t mean in the comments section of a blog. If you can’t restrain yourself, then try to limit yourself to sites that actually want your harsh words, like justrage.com or mybiggestcomplaint.com.

Some people say, ‘get over it’, but I think we have a right to be appalled and upset by fellow human behavior. It brings us all down, so stop passing your bad vibes onto other people, already!

And, by the way, you’re not as anonymous as you think so you might want to stop before you enrage someone who is even more of a nut job than you are. A Mr. John Jones experienced this in 2005, after getting into an argument with another man in a Yahoo chatroom, who then used “details obtained online… traveled 70 miles to Mr Jones’ home… and beat him up with a pickaxe handle” (new.bbc.co.uk). Yikes!

Okay, so enough Internet Rage – there’s only two more spots left on my list and then next one is a real pain in the neck:

2. Upper Limb Disorders (ULD)

keyboard

Upper Limb Disorders include: neck tension syndrome, carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome, tendinitis (mainly hands/wrists), tenosynovitis, bursitis, repetitive strain injury (RSI), and Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. All of these ailments can be linked to Internet use.

RSI Repetitive Strain Injury – the modern version of writer’s cramp, you experience pain and strain when you overuse one of your upper limbs (i.e. arms). “The basis for this illness concept is the idea that one can overuse a tool, such as a computer keyboard… in a way that causes tissue damage leading to pain” (Wikipedia).

Thoracic Outlet Syndrome – “The two groups of people most likely to develop TOS are those suffering neck injuries in motor vehicle accidents and those who use computers in non-ergonomic postures for extended periods of time” (Wikipedia).

Upper Limb Disorders earn second place on this list due to the overwhelming list of disorders they encompass and the fact that I couldn’t come up with anything funny for them (so they must be quite serious).

1. Internet Addiction

internet-addiction

This is Number One for two big reasons: it actually has the word Internet in the title of the affliction and also because it has been fatal in some cases.

The nature of the addiction is also pervasive: when it comes to the Internet, someone can “be addicted to nearly everything, starting with pure act of typing, visiting chat rooms, shopping on-line and ending up with multiplayer games, which users characterize as “heroinware.” (www.infoniac.com).

Also, it’s so real that there are rehabilitation centres for treatment. In a NY Times article, Martin Fackler describes Internet Addiction rehab in South Korea: “Drill instructors drive young men through military-style obstacle courses, counselors lead group sessions, and there are even therapeutic workshops on pottery and drumming.” He goes on to explain the seriousness of Internet Addiction in South Korea, “It has become a national issue here in recent years, as users started dropping dead from exhaustion after playing online games for days on end…”

Are you addicted?

  • Are you unable to limit your use of the Internet? Does it take up most of your free time?
  • Do you lose your sense of time when you’re online?
  • Do you take steps to allow yourself to stay online longer? (Do you stock up your desk with several meals? Wear a diaper? Drink energy drinks? Are you always improving your computers or your software?)
  • Do you experience withdrawal symptoms when you are prevented from getting online? (Anger, craving, restlessness, moodiness, irritable, depression)
  • Do you use your computer to escape reality?
  • Do you lie to others about your computer use?
  • Are you social isolated in the real world?
  • Have you traded your real life experiences for emotions that you now experience on the Internet through social networking, games, and porn?
  • Have you risked a real life relationship or your job over your Internet use?

If you were able to answer yes to several of these questions, please seek professional counsel for your Internet Addiction. Conveniently (and ironically) there are many online resources for you:

Top 10 Urban Legends & Myths

We’ve all heard them. Usually, they happened to a friend of a friend’s second cousin, and in almost every case they’re completely untrue. Still, some urban legends have managed to gain a remarkable amount of credibility. From creepy folklore to rumors about celebrities and politicians, here are the top ten urban legends that have managed to gain a popular following.

10. The Automatic 4.0

deadman

This one has been making its way across college campuses since the 1970s, and it’s been popping up as a plot point in movies and TV shows for years. It says that any college student whose roommate commits suicide will automatically receive a 4.0 grade point average for the semester as part of the college’s bereavement policy. Other versions tweak it a bit to include murder or an accident, but all stick to the basic principle of dead roommate=good grades. Not a word of the story is true, of course, and it’s said that the rumor most likely started out as a joke among stressed out college students.

9. Mr. Rogers Was a Navy Seal

rogers

Fred Rogers and his classic children’s show Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood were legendary in the TV world, so it was only a matter of time before a few scandalous rumors started floating around about him. Probably the most popular and downright ridiculous was the legend that claimed Rogers was a Navy Seal during the Vietnam War, and that he had numerous confirmed kills as a sniper. This same rumor often asserted that the only reason Rogers wore sweaters was to cover up all the tattoos he had gotten during his time in the service. Both tales are completely untrue, but this is one urban legend that refuses to die, and it is often applied to other clean-cut, wholesome celebrities, most notably John Denver.

8. Bloody Mary

193897604_4165ea827a

Although it’s more folklore than an urban legend, the Bloody Mary story is so old and well known that it had to make this list. A common game at children’s slumber parties, the story states that the ghost of Mary Worth, a woman who was supposedly executed for being a witch, will manifest when summoned. This usually involves going into a darkened room and shouting her name three times, at which point her face will appear in a mirror. There are a number of variations on the story, with some claiming that the face of Satan appears or that the mirror turns red, and others stating that the name must be said 13 times, but all follow this same general theme.

7. JFK and the Jelly Doughnut Speech

jfk speech Ich bin ein berliner jelly doughnut

The story dates back to 1963, when then-President John F. Kennedy traveled to Germany to give a speech. Wanting to express solidarity with the people of Berlin, Kennedy said to them “Ich bin ein Berliner,” which translates to English as “I am a Berliner.” But since a “Berliner” was also a certain kind of popular pastry in Germany at the time, many have surmised that the phrase translated to the crowd as “I am a jelly doughnut,” and over the years a number of stories have surfaced saying Kennedy was nearly laughed off the stage after saying it. It’s hard to say where the story originated, but it has been proven to be a myth, and reports have shown that not only did Kennedy have the phrase translated by a professional interpreter before using it, but that the crowd understood him perfectly.

6. Cokelore

Over the years, there have been so many urban legends about the popular soft drink Coca-Cola that they’ve been given their own name: Cokelore. Probably the most famous urban legend in this regard is the old claim that eating Pop Rocks candy and then drinking Coke will cause stomach damage. Meanwhile, another legend says that the acids in the soda can dissolve a tooth if it’s left in a glass of the drink overnight, and still another asserts that mixing Coke with aspirin produces a drug-like high. All these claims are false, but another popular claim, that Coke originally contained cocaine as a part of its formula, is verifiably true. The drink was created in the 1880s, and even after the negative aspects of cocaine were uncovered, the company continued using trace amounts of the drug in its soda until the 1920s.

5. The Good Samaritan

The Good Samaritan legend has been around for years, and it’s been attributed to a number of famous rich people, from Bill Gates to Nat King Cole. As the story goes, a motorist stops to help a man change a flat tire. The man asks for the motorist’s address so that he might send a reward. A few weeks later, the motorist receives a thank you note in the mail with a check for $10,000 signed by a famous celebrity. The story tends to vary depending on whom the grateful celebrity is, with one popular version claiming that Donald Trump paid off a helpful stranger’s mortgage. Trump himself has even tried to confirm this, but all proof points to it being nothing more than an often-repeated rumor.

4. Walt Disney Is Cryogenically Frozen

walt-disney

This is another rumor that’s been around for a long time, and it seems that everyone has heard it at some point or another. It says that Walt Disney arranged for his body to frozen upon his death in the hope that future technology would be able to bring him back to life. No one’s exactly sure how this one got started, but records show that Disney was cremated when he died in 1966. It is suspected that the amount of secrecy surrounding his funeral, coupled with his reputation as an inventor, led to the creation of this long-standing myth.

3. The Sewer Alligator

Sewer Alligator

This story, one of the most popular of all urban legends, asserts that the New York City sewer system is infested with deadly alligators. In the most popular versions, the animals were brought north from Florida by people who wanted to keep them as pets. When the gators started getting too big and violent, they were released into the sewers. This story dates back to the 1930s, when sensationalist newspapers started reporting countless stories of alligators being found in and around New York City, with some even claiming that police were making regular trips underground to hunt the creatures down. Nearly all of these stories are false, and the few that are true almost undoubtedly concern animals that escaped from local zoos, but the sewer alligator story has continued to be passed down through the years, and it still exists today in many different forms.

2. The Vanishing Hitchhiker

One of the oldest and most often repeated urban legends, the vanishing hitchhiker story comes in many forms. The most popular version involves a man who picks up a young hitchhiker (usually a girl) on a deserted country road. He drives her to her house, but when he turns to say goodbye he finds that she has inexplicably disappeared from the back seat of the car. Confused, the man rings the doorbell of the house, whereupon he learns that the girl has been dead for years, killed in a car accident on the very spot where he picked her up that night. There are a number of variations of this story, and it dates back so far that earlier versions take place on horseback or in covered wagons.

1. The Kidney Heist

The most ubiquitous and persistent urban legend, “the kidney heist” story has been immortalized on the internet, TV shows, and even a few movies. It supposedly dates back to 1997, when an e-mail started circulating warning people of a new and frightening crime that was catching on in some cities. In most versions, a business traveler is relaxing in a bar when a stranger strikes up a conversation and then offers to by them a drink. After taking a few sips, the traveler becomes woozy and then blacks out, only to awaken in a hotel room bathtub covered with ice. There is a phone next to them, and a note that says to call 911 immediately. When the paramedics arrive, the person learns that their kidney has been harvested by people who hope to sell it on the back market. This story is completely false, but it has been circulating for years, and its appearance on the internet is one of the oldest e-mail hoaxes. In order to quell the rumor, The National Kidney Foundation has even asked supposed victims of the crime to contact them, but to this date they haven’t had any takers. A scary tale, but still an urban legend.

10 Creative Charity Websites

Giving to charity is something that is seen as generous, responsible, and extremely caring. Many people donate money to certain charities that they hold close to them. Others will chip in their piece of charity by completing volunteer work at soup kitchens or working at a homeless shelter, or even volunteering at a local SPCA. However, in today’s world, as economic situations are tough and less people have the extra time or money to donate to charity it is even more important that we show we care by helping others through charitable causes.

It is said that in 2009, charity donations will drop about 5.6%. This is a very steep drop as the need for charity donations is on the rise. Because of this, companies and charity sponsors have come up with more creative ways to give back. Since Internet usage is booming, many charities have come up with websites that raise money to provide donations, whether they are food, clothing, shelter, or just money.

Below is a list of 10 charity websites anyone can visit in order to give back. This list isn’t for advertising reasons, but if you ever have a few spare minutes while on the ‘net, check a few of them out.

Top 10 Podcasts You Must Listen To

Internet radio shows, or podcasts, are one of the fastest growing forms of new media. With modern technology, anyone with a computer and an internet connection can become an amateur radio host and start producing a program on any subject they please, and websites like i-tunes and podcast alley now host thousands of different shows. The lack of time constraints and censorship means that podcasts are able to be much longer and more free form than traditional radio, which has attracted a number of celebrities and former radio hosts to the format. Meanwhile, several respected radio and television shows are now being released in podcast form, which has allowed them to find a whole new audience on the internet. Whether online-only or traditional radio shows, the following are the top ten must-listen podcasts. There are always new shows being released, so feel free to leave any recommendations in the comments section.

10. Smodcast

smodcast

There might not be any better example of the fluidness of podcasting than Smodcast, an ongoing R-rated dialogue between filmmaker Kevin Smith (Clerks, Dogma) and his longtime producer Scott Mosier. The show has no set format, and there is little structure beyond a short musical intro. From there, a frequently under-the-influence Smith and the deadpan Mosier let themselves go wherever the conversation takes them, from musing on the sexual habits of the Harry Potter characters to discussing film, hockey, and their personal lives. The result is a deceivingly simple style that feels more like eavesdropping on the late night conversations of two best friends than it does a real radio show, but when the two participants are this funny, that’s usually a good thing.

9. Mysterious Universe

mysterious-universe

From alien abductions and secret government programs to tales of ghostly occurrences and visitations by the Bigfoot, Mysterious Universe has all the weirdest paranormal news worth speculating about. The show, which is hosted by Australians Benjamin Grundy and Aaron Wright, has just returned for its second season after gaining something of a cult following during its first year on the air. Each week, the hosts scour the internet to find the newest underground stories in cryptozoology and conspiracy theories, as well as the latest news in the world of science and technology. Despite their bizarre subject matter, Grundy and Wright do an admirable job of keeping Mysterious Universe grounded in logic, and always approach every UFO sighting and ghost story from a skeptic’s perspective. Perhaps the best parts of the show are the often-lengthy “true” stories submitted by listeners documenting their personal brushes with the paranormal, which have described everything from exploring ancient underground caves in Germany to encounters with lizard men and shadow people. Is any of it true? Probably not, but like everything else on this show, they make for some always interesting and often unforgettable stories.

8. The B.S. Report

bsreport

Designed for the sports fan with a sense of humor, the B.S. Report is a frequent podcast hosted by ESPN sportswriter Bill Simmons. Simmons has long been a cult favorite of sports fans for his popular columns on the ESPN website and magazine, where he is known for his uncanny ability to elevate his discussions on baseball and the NBA with a healthy dose of pop culture references and wickedly funny jokes. He brings this same style to his podcast, which is as consistently laugh-out-loud funny as it is informative about the latest news and controversies in the world of athletics. Like all the best podcasts, Simmons’ show is very loose and free form, and it’s not uncommon for him to go almost a whole show without even mentioning sports, especially when he really gets going about movies or his ongoing obsession with reality television. When it is on topic, though, the show turns into one of the most insightful and entertaining sports programs around, thanks in large part to Simmons’ clever banter with his guests, who range from sports stars to comedians and fellow journalists.

7. Left, Right, and Center

lr_335x120

For astute political talk that tackles every perspective on an issue, you can’t do better than Left, Right, and Center. The show, which features four commentators from different parts of the political spectrum debating the issues of the day, usually airs on New York public radio, but it’s also released as a weekly podcast. The show is moderated by Matthew Miller, a member of the Center for American Progress, who represents the political centrists, and is co-hosted by Robert Scheer on the left, Tom Blankley on the right, and Arianna Huffington, who is described as representing the “independent-progressive blogosphere.” Unlike most political debate shows, which tend to dissolve into shouting matches, Left, Right, and Center prizes reasoned, courteous debate where every panelist is given their chance to speak. There is even a final segment where each co-host is given a chance to bring up an issue of their choosing and make a statement about it, during which the others are not allowed to interrupt. Compared to the fiery rhetoric and constant bickering of cable news shows, the show is a refreshingly rational take on political debate, and it’s also a great way to keep up to date on current events.

6. Filmspotting

filmspot_web_r

Filmspotting is a weekly podcast out of Chicago that is a must-listen for any movie fan. The show is ostensibly focused on movie reviews, but hosts Adam Kempenaar and Matty Robinson do more than just tell their listeners what new movies are worth seeing, they also discuss and examine film as an art form as thoroughly as any critics working today. The show doesn’t just focus on current movies, either, as the hosts frequently discuss old films as part of theme marathons which might focus on anything from the films of Alfred Hitchcock to 70s sci-fi cinema. In true film geek fashion, the duo also do a weekly top five list, counting down their favorites on subjects like the top buddy movies or the “best films to teach an alien about earth.” Throughout it all, Kempenaar and Robinson manage to match perceptive commentary with a genuine love for movies that is as infectious as it is informative. Few critics manage to strike a balance the high and low brow so well, or do it with as much humor and insight.

5. Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me

wait-wait-dont-tell-me-podcast

One of the most popular programs on National Public Radio, Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me! is now available as a podcast, and it has become one of the most popular downloads at the i-tunes store. The show is a news program in the form of a game show. Each week a panel of three humorists and writers join host Peter Sagal in Chicago, where they are quizzed on the week’s most important and weirdest news stories. Listeners also get to call in to play a number of different news related games with the panelists in exchange for a prize. The show is great for keeping up with the news and learning about the latest ridiculous stories in science and politics, but its real strong point is the quality of the writing and the expert comic timing of the guests. Rarely do you get a chance to hear people this witty riff off of one another with such skill and precision, and the results are often hilarious.

4. The Adam Carolla Podcast

3-header-ace

You probably know Adam Carolla from The Man Show or as the longtime host of the radio program Loveline, but what you might not know is that the comedian has become one of the internet’s most prolific and successful podcasters. His daily show the Adam Carolla Podcast is one of the most addicting and downright hilarious internet radio programs, thanks in large part to his keen observational humor and rants about everything from ticket-happy LA cops to movies and television. Outside of providing a forum for Carolla to air his often-controversial opinions on everything under the sun, the podcast is also a long-form interview show. Each episode, Carolla engages a celebrity guest in a rambling dialogue about their childhood and their journey in show business, relaying stories along the way about his own trials as an actor, comedian, and former carpenter. In the hands of a less-capable conversationalist, this podcast might become dull or repetitive, but Carolla is a born raconteur, and listening to him complain or tell stories about his wild younger days never seems to get old.

3. The Moth

moth_podcast

As far as podcasts go, things don’t get much simpler or more engrossing than the Moth, a weekly podcast run out of New York City by a nonprofit arts organization. The show is made up of recordings of “true stories told before a live audience without notes.” Each week, the group releases short 10-20 minute tales told by people from all walks of life. Past presenters have included writers, comedians, scientists, and even New York City police officers. The true stories they tell range from short anecdotes about unusual or embarrassing situations to epic and harrowing stories of brushes with death. One recent story told by a journalist traced her narrow escape from the clutches of rebel soldiers after her truck broke down on one of the most dangerous and desolate roads in Africa, while another described one man’s comic misadventures while on vacation in Italy. Whatever the subject matter, the group has a way of picking stories with a universal appeal that will keep you coming back for more.

2. The How Stuff Works Podcasts

how-stuff-works-podcast

Ever wonder what causes deja vu, how the Panama Canal was built, or just what it is exactly that’s inside a Twinkie? If so, then you should be listening to the many podcasts put out by the website howstuffworks.com. The shows, which include “Stuff You Should Know,” “Stuff You Missed in History Class,” and “Tech Stuff,” focus on all the strange and obscure questions your high school teachers never got around to covering. Each short episode tackles one question or subject from history, which the hosts then discuss and explain with a great deal of humor and intelligence. The hosts always manage to touch on all the major points of their subject and back up their claims with hard data, but everything is kept at a breezy and entertaining pace. So while the coronation of Charlemagne or the full details of how habeas corpus works might not seem like the most scintillating subject matter, the shows have a way of drawing you in, and after each episode you’ll be surprised by how much you can learn just from listening to a few podcasts.

1. This American Life

this-american-life

This is certainly the obvious pick for number one, but it’s safe to say that podcasts–or radio, for that matter– don’t get any better than This American Life, the long-running program put out by Chicago Public Radio. Each episode, the show selects a theme, which could be anything from “the kindness of strangers” to “the fine print,” and then provides a series of journalism and non-fiction stories loosely based around it. It’s one of the most intelligent and well-produced programs on the radio, thanks to its unique, often funny take on current events, history, and personal stories. The people behind the show have a real gift for seeking out interesting perspectives on old themes, and it’s rare that you don’t come away from listening to it having learned something you weren’t even aware you didn’t know before. Take a recent episode called “Rest Stop,” where the show’s producers camped out at a highway rest stop in New York to interview travelers as they stopped for gas and food, and in the span of an hour managed to cram in stories about everything from eccentric Russian-American retirees to foreign exchange students. Whatever the subject, you can always count on This American Life to produce some interesting characters and funny, often oddly touching stories. Do yourself a favor and check it out as soon as possible. There is a reason why this show is consistently ranked as the number one podcast on i-tunes.
